A Study on the Nurse¢¥s Working State in the University Hospital


Abstract
For the purpose of finding out the work behavior of nurses in the university hosp-itals, a survey was carried out in The Chung Nam University Hospital, The Han Kang Sung Sim Hospital and The Seoul National University Hospital during the period of July 17 to September 20, 1975.
The respondents for this survey were total 102 nurses working in the hospitals. The results obtained from the survey are as follows:
The nurse¢¥s work experiences in the University hospitals were reported under 2 years by the most of them (73.5%).
About half (45. 1%) of the respondents reported that they did not visit every patient on round during every duty while the majority (54.9%) of them reported they did it faithfully for all patients.
The activities for the long term hospitalized patients on rounds were reported that they were asking the patient¢¥s conditions (58.8%) or only studying the patients faces 41.2%).
Health education for the patients who were about being discharged from the hospitals was given by the staff nurses (45. 1%), charge doctor (40.2,%), and the head nurses (14.7%).
The greater part (55.9%) of the nurses hoped the interns prepare the doctor¢¥s routines rounds by a main reason of that the nurses usually were too busy to prepare it 56.1%.
The majority of the wards in the hospitals included more than one department, and most of the doctors in each department visited their patients over twice a week while (26.5%) of them did once.
The patients in those hospitals were cared in the functional method (53.9 % ), the team
method (32. 4), and the case method (13. 7%) by the nurses.
In case some patients were discharged from the hospitals without spending all drugs prescribed for them, the parental drugs were turned in to the pharmacy (42. 1%), made fixture (36.2¡Æ0), or injected to the patients before getting discharged (21. 6%). Otherwise the drugs per oral were mostly given to the patients (75. 5%) or become fix-ture (24.5¡Æ0) by the nurses in wards.
The ward rounding activities right after the food service for the patients were mainly made by the diet department personnel (86.3%).
The most important factor making the nurses nervous during their duty hours was annoyance of the patient¢¥s families (63.7%), and the next one was admission of the patients just before leaving their wards (14. 7%).
The carriage of drug used in wards was conducted by the aid nurses (41.2%), the staff nurses (21.6%), and the personnel of the pharmacy (21. 6%).
